When architects Jonathan Ward and Jin Ah Park designed a home of their own in 2015, they decided to incorporate an offering for the neighborhood: a striking piece of artwork along the facade. Located in Venice, California, just blocks from world-famous beach boardwalks, the open-air structure features a laser-cut aluminum screen along the exterior. The dramatic piece of structural art shines during the day and is illuminated into the night, adding to the home’s allure.

Once inside, the interior soars upward in the double-height living area. Sliding glass doors seamlessly connect a central courtyard, wrap around the kitchen, and meet a secondary living area in the back.
Today, the home is affectionately known as the California Poppy House. Among the home’s other striking features is a voluminous living area grounded by a wood-clad wall on one side and soaring glass walls on the other. A clear and elegant floor plan eliminates sight lines, seamlessly connecting the dining area, kitchen, and an outdoor courtyard.

Sliding glass doors open up the main living areas to a central and private courtyard deck, which offers exotic fruit trees as a backdrop for entertaining. Continuing toward the back of the home, more sliding doors open up an adjacent music room to a cozy backyard, complete with a whimsical children’s play structure.

Throughout the interior, materials and finishes were inspired by the experiences Ward and Park have had working on architectural projects all over the world. Sustainability also played a key role in the design, with rooftop solar panels providing net-zero energy source for the home.
